Anja Kampe was born in Thuringia and studied at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Turin. Her performance as Sieglinde at the Washington National Opera in 2003 alongside Plácido Domingo marked her international breakthrough. Since then she has performed the role at Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Bayreuth Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the BBC Proms, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Liceu in Barcelona, as well as elsewhere.
Anja Kampe is also renowned for her sophisticated interpretation of Senta (Der fliegende Holländer), a role she has sung at the Bavarian State Opera, La Monnaie, the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hamburg State Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Teatro Real, Madrid and in Vienna, Zurich and Milan. In 2006 she made her debut as Leonore (Fidelio) at Glyndebourne and has since sung the role in Zurich, Los Angeles, Vienna, Munich and Milan.
Her repertoire also includes Ariadne, Isolde, Kundry, Tosca, Giorgetta (Il tabarro), Jenůfa, Elsa (Lohengrin), Odabella (Attila) and Brünnhilde (Siegfried). In November 2016 she made her debut as Katerina Izmaylova (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District) at the Bavarian State Opera.
