2022 Salzburg Easter Festival - the programme

Ladies and gentlemen, dear Patrons of the Salzburg Easter Festival,

at the heart of the 2022 Festival will be Richard Wagner and his Lohengrin, whose only other production at the Easter Festival was first given back in 1976. It will be produced by three stars of today’s music theatre aesthetics: Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito have repeatedly been named “Director Team of the Year” and are responsible for the production together with Anna Viebrock, perhaps one of the most effective stage and costume designers of our time. American tenor Eric Cutler portays the title role, while Elsa will be sung by the soprano Jacquelyn Wagner, who enjoyed great success as Eva in Wagner’s Meister singer at the 2019 Easter Festival.

The Herbert von Karajan Prize will in 2022 be awarded to the Staatskapelle Dresden – an exceptional ensemble that is rich in tradition, and which will naturally once again be the orchestra in residence at the Easter Festival. Guest conductor Tugan Sokhiev will present Dmitri Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, better known as the ‘Leningrad’. One of the world’s leading violists, Antoine Tamestit, will play the solo part in Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, which will be followed by Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony – the work that the composer dedicated in 1915 ‘to the Royal Orchestra of Dresden, in gratitude’.

The Choral Concert will be dedicated exclusively to the music of Anton Bruckner, featuring his unfinished Ninth Symphony alongside two sacred works: the hymn Vexilla regis and his large-scale Te Deum, which might deservedly be described as the highpoint of the oeuvre of this Austrian composer. We are delighted that the Bavarian Radio Chorus will once again be our guest in Salzburg for this concert.

The popular Concert for Salzburg will be conducted by the Staatskapelle’s principal guest conductor, the South Korean Myung-Whun Chung. The programme will include the Fourth Symphony of Johannes Brahms, the 125th anniversary of whose death is in 2022.

We invite you to discover the full variety of the 2022 programme of the Easter Festival. As usual, it will also feature intimate chamber concerts and several special events.

The Salzburg Easter Festival, Christian Thielemann and Nikolaus Bachler are looking forward to your visit.
