In 2021 Giacomo Puccini’s last opera, Turandot, will feature on the programme of the Easter Festival for the first-ever time – with a stellar cast including Anna Netrebko in the title role, Yusif Eyvazov as Calaf and Golda Schultz as Liù. Yona Kim will direct the opera, and the sets will be designed by Christian Schmidt. In order to satisfy the demand for tickets, we have decided to offer a third performance (outside the subscription process). Our Patrons will be given the first option on these tickets.

The 2021 Herbert von Karajan Prize will be awarded to Hilary Hahn, who began as a ‘Wunderkind’ and is today a star violinist who is celebrated throughout the world. She will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major under the baton of our Guest Conductor, Sir Antonio Pappano, who will also continue our series of exceptional Mahler interpretations with a performance of the Seventh Symphony.

We have also invited internationally renowned piano virtuosos to the 2021 Easter Festival. Denis Matsuev, one of the most in-demand pianists of his generation, will be performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, and the same concert will feature Richard Strauss’s famous tone poem Ein Heldenleben. Sir András Schiff will direct the popular Concert for Salzburg, in which he will conduct Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony and also play the solo part in piano concertos by Haydn and Mozart.

We are delighted to be able to welcome back Philippe Herreweghe with his Collegium Vocale Gent, who were our guests here in 2018. This time, they will be performing Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor.

We will also be continuing our wonderful tradition of chamber music concerts with the musicians of the Staatskapelle Dresden. One of these concerts will commemorate a former Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle, Giuseppe Sinopoli, who was also active as a composer; the other will present the string octets of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and George Enescu.

We look forward to your visit to the next Easter Festival in 2021.

Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival and
Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden
