The Salzburg Easter Festival mourns the passing of Johan Botha
The Salzburg Easter Festival mourns the passing of Johan Botha, who lost his struggle against serious illness on 8 September 2016. Together with Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden, Johan Botha heralded the new era of the Salzburg Easter Festival when he performed in the title role of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal in 2013. He was due to have sung the title role in Verdi’s Otello at Easter 2016, but to his great regret he was already compelled to withdraw from this engagement on account of his illness.
The music world has lost one of our era’s exceptional singers, and one of the best heldentenors of all time. We shall always cherish our memories of Johan Botha.
