The Salzburg Easter Festival Mourn Hans Werner Henze

The Salzburg Easter Festival wishes to express its sadness at the death of the composer Hans Werner Henze, who died in Dresden yesterday, 27th October 2012, aged 86. The musical world loses one of its greatest composers and the Staatskapelle Dresden their current Capell Compositeur (composer in residence). Henze's compositions play a major role in the Staatskapelle's current concert season as well as at the 2013 Salzburg Easter Festival. The planned world premiere of his orchestral piece Isoldes Tod (Isolde’s Death) cannot now take place, as Hans Werner Henze was unfortunately unable to complete the composition. Consideration is now being given to a worthy replacement, which will be announced at a later date.

„We are deeply distressed at the news of Hans Werner Henze's death, which represents a major loss to the musical world“, says Peter Alward, Intendant and Managing Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival. „It is very sad that Henze was unable to experience the full extent of the planned evaluation of his work in the coming season. We will honour his memory, particularly at Easter 2013.“

The Staatskapelle Dresden and their Chief Conductor Christian Thielemann, Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, received the sad news whilst on their first joint tour through Asia. Their statements (in German):
