A major honour has been accorded to this year’s opera production of the Salzburg Easter Festival. For his stage designs for Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, Philipp Stölzl has been chosen by the magazine Opernwelt as the “Stage designer of the year”.

50 independent music critics from Europe and the USA offered special praise for Stölzl’s “multi-perspective, splintered peep-box set inspired by the aesthetic of graphic novels” that the director and set designer had conceived for his impressive production in the Grosses Festspielhaus.
Philipp Stölzl divided the stage into six segments in which to realize his filmic narrative style, presenting Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in black and white, and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci in colour. Stölzl was born in Munich in 1967 and is an internationally successful stage director and set designer; he also directs feature films, music videos and advertising films.

We offer him our heartfelt congratulations!
