Peter Alward terminates contract in June 2015

Peter Alward, Managing Director and Intendant of the Salzburg Easter Festival, terminates his contract with effect from 30th June 2015

“At the end of 2009, when to my considerable surprise I was asked to take on the role of Managing Director and Intendant of the Salzburg Easter Festival, I regarded this as a relatively interim appointment. Nevertheless, my fifth Festival has just ended successfully and it both was and remains an honour and a pleasure to be able to work in Salzburg.

However, since I will enter my 65th year in 2015, it would seem to be the right time to hand over the reins. I have therefore informed the Chairman of our Advisory Board that I do not wish to renew my contract when it expires on 30th June 2015, so that there is sufficient time to find a suitable successor.

Until the end of my contract, however, I will continue to fulfil all my obligations to the Salzburg Easter Festival to the best of my ability, so that the Festival, with the Staatskapelle Dresden under its Artistic Director Christian Thielemann, can look forward to celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2017.”

Peter Alward

Statement of the supervisory board of the Salzburg Easter Festival:

“The supervisory board of the Salzburg Easter Festival deeply regrets Peter Alward’s personal decision to terminate his contract with effect from 30th June 2015. The supervisory board would have been happy to continue the collaboration with Peter Alward beyond this date.

Peter Alward has rendered great service to the Salzburg Easter Festival in the recent years. In 2010 he took over as Managing Director and Intendant at short notice. In 2011, after the unexpected decision of the Berliner Philharmoniker not to continue their collaboration with the Salzburg Easter Festival from 2013 onwards, he managed within three weeks to engage Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden as the new artistic team. Thus he ensured the artistic future of the festival at the highest level.

We wish to express our sincere thanks for his extraordinary achievements, the excellent collaboration with the supervisory board and strenuous efforts for the Salzburg Easter Festival.”

Statement by Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden (available in German only):
