New Programme of the Easter Festival in Autumn
The 2021 Salzburg Easter Festival will take place this autumn – on the weekend of All Saints, from 29 October to 1 November. Christian Thielemann and Nikolaus Bachler are presenting a series of exceptional concerts with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and soloists including Hilary Hahn, Anja Kampe, Golda Schultz, Daniele Gatti, Denis Matsuev and René Pape.
Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden will open the ‘Autumn Easter Festival’ on Friday 29 October with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem. The Bachchor Salzburg will sing, and the soloists will be Golda Schultz, Christa Mayer, Sebastian Kohlhepp and René Pape.
On Saturday, the Easter Festival will welcome guest conductor Daniele Gatti to the podium for his concert with the Staatskapelle. Hilary Hahn, a celebrated violin world star, will play Mozart’s A-major Violin Concerto. The programme will also include Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt and Robert Schumann’s Third Symphony.
On All Hallows’ Eve, Sunday 31 October, Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden will present a concert entitled Winterstürme – ‘Winter storms’ – featuring excerpts from Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung. Anja Kampe, who sang Brünnhilde at the 2017 Easter Festival, will sing the role of Sieglinde in the first act of Die Walküre, for which she will bejoined by Stephen Gould (Siegmund) and René Pape (Hunding). In the second half of the concert, the Staatskapelle will play the dawn scene, Siegfried’s Rhine Journey and Funeral March, and then Anja Kampe will close the evening with Brünnhilde’s final monologue from Götterdämmerung.
The Festival will conclude on All Saints’ Day, 1 November, when Denis Matsuev, one of the most in-demand pianists of his generation, will play Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in a minor. Under the baton of Christian Thielemann, the second half of the concert will feature Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem for large orchestra Ein Heldenleben.
‘I am especially delighted that we have succeeded in putting together such a varied, extraordinary festival programme for this autumn’, says Christian Thielemann. ‘An autumn Easter Festival is undoubtedly unusual, but Salzburg is naturally a lovely place to visit at this time of the year too. I am very excited about this new experience!’
The autumn Easter Festival / 2022 Easter Festival
For the first time in its history, the Salzburg Easter Festival will not be taking place at the usual time, but this coming autumn. In March 2021, the current pandemic and the restrictions planned for the spring prompted Christian Thielemann, the Artistic Director of the Easter Festival and Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden, and Intendant Nikolaus Bachler, to postpone the Festival from Easter weekend to the weekend of All Saints, from 29 October to 1 November 2021.
The 2022 Easter Festival will take place as usual around Easter, from Saturday 9 to Monday 18 April. The programme will feature Christian Thielemann and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, and will be made public in June 2021.
