Claudio Abbado 1933-2014
The Salzburg Easter Festival wishes to express its great sadness at the passing of Claudio Abbado, its former Artistic Director, on Monday, 20 January 2014.
Peter Alward, Intendant and Managing Director of the festival, says: “With Claudio Abbado, the world of classical music has lost one of its greatest interpreters. Those lucky enough to work with him could not fail to be positively influenced by the highest standards he set himself and others and by the charisma he projected. It is fortunate that so much of his work could be preserved for posterity, to the immense benefit of future generations. Claudio Abbado was Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival from 1994 until 2002. We wish to express our deep sadness at his passing and our sincerest condolences to his family.”
Christian Thielemann, the Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, says: „I am very sad to receive the news of the passing of Claudio Abbado. I have always admired how he managed to combine emotions and intellect in his Interpretations. Abbado was an extraordinary opera and concert conductor and likewise a very sympathic and modest colleague. His death means a great loss for the musical world.“
