The Salzburg Easter Festival mourns the passing of Georges Prêtre, the great conductor who died last week. His death is not just a painful loss to the music world, but has also made necessary a change to the Concert for Salzburg 2017, in which Georges Prêtre was to have made his first appearance at the Salzburg Easter Festival. Christian Thielemann and Lorenzo Viotti, who were to share the podium with Prêtre for this concert, have generously offered to take on the works he would have conducted. The programme is now as follows:

CONCERT FOR SALZBURG
SÄCHSISCHE STAATSKAPELLE DRESDEN

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Overture from the incidental music to Egmont Op. 84

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 21 in C major, K 467

Daniil Trifonov, Piano
Christian Thielemann, Conductor

ERNEST CHAUSSON
Symphony in B-flat major, Op. 20

MAURICE RAVEL
Boléro

Lorenzo Viotti, Conductor

Thursday, 13 April 2017, 7pm
Grosses Festspielhaus

A second cast change will affect the chamber opera Lohengrin by Salvatore Sciarrino. In the course of the preparations for this production, it transpired that the stage sets conceived for the Grosse Universitätsaula (Large University Auditorium) in Salzburg cannot be adapted to the space available on the Semper Zwei stage of the co-production partner, the Semperoper Dresden. For this reason, the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Semperoper Dresden have mutually agreed to dissolve their cooperation for this production. As a further consequence, this work will not be performed by members of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy of the Staatskapelle Dresden, but by œnm, the österreichisches ensemble für neue musik (Austrian ensemble for new music). This world-class ensemble is based in Salzburg and will be giving its debut at the Salzburg Easter Festival. Here is the cast list:
