René Pape was a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor and studied at the Dresden College of Music Carl Maria von Weber. He has been a member of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera since 1988, singing the great bass roles such as Filippo II (Don Carlo), Rocco (Fidelio), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), König Heinrich (Lohengrin) and König Marke (Tristan und Isolde). Worldwide guest appearances have taken him to the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the state operas in Dresden, Munich and Vienna, as well as to the festivals of Bayreuth, Salzburg, Verbier, Lucerne, St Petersburg and Glyndebourne. He has been awarded numerous prizes and honours, including the title of Kammersänger in Berlin, Bavaria and Austria. René Pape last appeared at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2019 as soloist in Dvořák’s Stabat mater.
