2019: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Dear Music Lovers,
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will be the main work on the programme of the 2019 Salzburg Easter Festival. This will be only the second production of Richard Wagner’s opera in the history of the Easter Festival (the first having been in 1974/75), and only the fourth production of this work at any of the Salzburg Festivals. So it is truly high time to get to grips with this masterpiece again, and we are looking forward to the production by Jens-Daniel Herzog, with sets and costumes by Mathis Neidhardt and Sibylle Gädeke. We are especially happy that we have been able to engage an exceptional cast, with Georg Zeppenfeld as Hans Sachs, Vitalij Kowaljow as Veit Pogner, Adrian Eröd as Beckmesser and Klaus Florian Vogt as Walther von Stolzing.
In our concert programme, we shall be taking a musical journey from the Baroque via the Classical and Romantic periods right down to the present day. The 2019 Herbert von Karajan Prize will be awarded to Mariss Jansons, who will be our guest conductor in performances of Haydn’s ‘Military’ Symphony and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, the latter with Regula Mühlemann as soprano soloist. The in-demand violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann – who will be the ‘Capell-Virtuos’ of the Staatskapelle Dresden in the 2018/19 season – will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and will also be both soloist and conductor in works by Bach and Mozart in the Concert for Salzburg. The choral concert, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, will feature Dvořák’s Te Deum with a wonderful ensemble of soloists comprising Venera Gimadieva, Elisabeth Kulman, Pavol Breslik and René Pape. We have also been able to engage a prominent actor – Tobias Moretti – for the speaking part in Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, which will be performed in two chamber concerts.
We can also announce no less than two world premières: an orchestral work by Sofia Gubaidulina composed expressly for the Staatskapelle Dresden, entitled Der Zorn Gottes (‘The wrath of God’), and the chamber opera Thérèse by the young German composer Philipp Maintz, which is a joint commission by the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Hamburg State Opera.
We hope that you will find our varied programme exciting, and we look forward to your visit to the next Easter Festival.
