Mezzo-soprano Christa Mayer was born in Bavaria. She studied at the Bavarian Academy of Singing and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich and won the International ARD Competition. Since 2001 she has been an ensemble member of the Semperoper Dresden, performing roles such as Erda and Waltraute in the Ring des Nibelungen, Magdalene (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde), Gaea (Daphne), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Fenena (Nabucco), Mrs. Quickly (Falstaff), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Countess Geschwitz (Lulu) and Auntie (Peter Grimes). Her baroque repertory includes Ottavia (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare), Bradamante (Alcina) and Orlando.
Guest appearances have taken her to opera houses in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Venice, Florence, Barcelona, Bilbao and Sevilla. In 2007 Christa Mayer performed in the Ring production of La fura dels Baus in Valencia under Zubin Mehta. She made her Bayreuth Festival debut in 2008 as Erda and Waltraute under the baton of Christian Thielemann.
On the concert stage, Christa Mayer has worked with renowned conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Herbert Blomstedt, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Fabio Luisi, Ingo Metzmacher and Christian Thielemann. At the 2014 Salzburg Easter Festival she performed in Mozart’s Requiem.
