Parsifal: Historic Co-Production Between The Salzburg Easter Festival And The Beijing Music Festival

The Salzburg Easter Festival and the Beijing Music Festival are delighted to announce the historic signing of a co-production agreement between their two organizations.

Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal has never before been staged in China and it is therefore appropriate that it should receive its first performances in Wagner’s bicentenary year 2013. The Salzburg Easter Festival, under its new artistic director Christian Thielemann, will first present the opera, in a production directed by Michael Schulz and with sets and costumes by Alexander Polzin, in Salzburg in March 2013. This production, with a partially changed cast and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Mr. Peter Schneider, will then be revived by Michael Schulz at the Beijing Music Festival in October 2013.

The Salzburg Easter Festival wishes to express its delight and grateful thanks for the initiative taken by the Beijing Music Festival in presenting the Chinese premiere of Wagner’s masterpiece and in particular to Maestro Long Yu for guiding the co-production discussion to their successful conclusion.

Thus, the new production of Parsifal at the Salzburg Easter Festival 2013 has three co-production partners: The Beijing Music Festival, the Semperoper Dresden, and Teatro Real, Madrid.
